Never buy an iPhone that shows “iPhone Locked to Owner” or that the seller cannot remove from Find My. Also test mobile service and document the IMEI, invoice and seller identity; no single online checker can guarantee a phone will never be reported later.
Activation Lock and carrier blacklisting are different. Activation Lock protects the owner's Apple Account relationship; a carrier blacklist can stop cellular service based on the IMEI. A careful purchase checks both and keeps evidence of ownership transfer.
Safe handover sequence
- Meet the seller with the powered-on device.
- Record the IMEI and match it to the phone and invoice.
- Have the seller turn off Find My and sign out themselves—never ask for their password.
- Erase the device and begin setup until it reaches activation without requesting the old owner's account.
- Test a UAE SIM or eSIM, call, SMS and mobile data.
- Use a traceable payment and retain a signed invoice or receipt with seller details.
Why an IMEI result is not a lifetime guarantee
A clean result only describes the databases checked at that moment. A phone can be reported lost, stolen or unpaid later. Proof of purchase, seller verification and a return or refund commitment remain essential.
Stop the transaction if
- The device shows “iPhone Locked to Owner”.
- The seller asks you to bypass setup or use a temporary account.
- IMEIs do not match across Settings, packaging and invoice.
- Cellular service cannot be tested.
- The price is far below market and the ownership story is unclear.
Frequently asked questions
Can Activation Lock be bypassed?
Do not buy on that promise. Apple recommends returning a pre-owned device if it is protected by Activation Lock.
Is a clean IMEI enough?
No. It is one check at one point in time; add seller identity, proof of ownership, activation and network tests.
Should I give the seller my Apple Account password?
Never. You can activate the erased phone yourself without sharing your password.
