Buying a US iPhone for use in the UAE: the complete checklist

Before buying a US iPhone for the UAE, check eSIM, carrier lock, model number, network support, warranty, returns and the true landed price.

US iPhone and UAE eSIM buying checklist
Short answer

A US iPhone can work in the UAE, but newer US models may be eSIM-only. Buy only after confirming the exact model number, an unlocked carrier status, UAE eSIM support, network bands, warranty route and a written return policy.

A lower US price can look attractive until tax, shipping, SIM differences and after-sales support are included. The safest comparison is not US sticker price versus UAE shelf price; it is the final usable cost of the exact model in your hand.

Regional differences can change by generation, so never rely on a listing that only says “international version”. Ask for the model number and verify it against Apple's model-identification page.

The six checks to complete before paying

  1. Confirm the exact A-number and storage in Settings or on the original packaging.
  2. Open Settings › General › About and confirm Carrier Lock says “No SIM restrictions”.
  3. Check whether that US model has a physical SIM tray or requires eSIM.
  4. Confirm your UAE carrier supports eSIM activation for your plan, including business or prepaid lines.
  5. Ask who handles warranty or returns in the UAE and get the answer in writing.
  6. Add sales tax, delivery, card charges and any import costs before comparing prices.

eSIM-only is not automatically a problem

An unlocked eSIM-only iPhone can be practical in the UAE and while travelling, but it removes the option of moving a physical SIM in an emergency. People who frequently swap devices, use smaller overseas carriers or depend on a corporate SIM should confirm the activation process first.

Warranty and repairs

Apple's warranty terms say service for iPhone may be restricted to the country where the device was originally sold. That does not mean every imported phone will be refused, but it means local service should never be assumed. A trustworthy UAE seller should state whether it provides its own warranty if Apple service is unavailable.

When a US model makes sense

  • You are comfortable using eSIM and your UAE carrier confirms support.
  • The device is demonstrably unlocked and the model supports the bands you need.
  • The saving remains meaningful after every cost is included.
  • The seller provides a clear inspection period, returns and UAE after-sales support.

Frequently asked questions

Will a US iPhone work with du or e&?

An unlocked model can work, but SIM format and plan eligibility matter. Confirm the exact model and eSIM activation with your carrier before buying.

Can Apple UAE repair a US iPhone?

Service may be available, but Apple's warranty terms allow iPhone service to be restricted to the original country of sale. Confirm before purchase and get the seller's local warranty in writing.

How do I know it is unlocked?

Open Settings › General › About. The Carrier Lock or Network Provider Lock field should say “No SIM restrictions”.
