Start with the easy causes: remove the screen protector and case, unplug the charger and clean the screen. Then update and restart. If it continues, the touch layer may be faulty and needs inspection.
Ghost touch — the screen registering taps you didn't make — can make an iPhone almost unusable. The cause is often surprisingly simple.
Fixes, in order
- Remove the screen protector — a cracked or lifting protector is the most common cause.
- Take off the case, especially metal or magnetic cases.
- Unplug the charger. Cheap or damaged chargers can cause electrical noise on the touchscreen.
- Dry and clean the screen; moisture and sweat cause false taps.
- Force restart the phone.
- Update to the latest iOS.
- Back up and reset all settings (Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset All Settings).
When it's hardware
If ghost touch happens with no protector, no case and no charger, after a reset, the display's touch layer is likely faulty — often after a drop or a non-genuine screen replacement. Book a repair.
iPhone 18 Pro note
A touchscreen freeze when Notification Center and Control Center were opened together affected iOS 27 at launch; Apple fixed it in iOS 27.0.1. That's a freeze, not ghost touch, but it's worth updating first.
