Accessories, screen protectors and software updates don't void your warranty. Damage from unauthorised repairs, non-genuine parts, liquid or physical abuse isn't covered, and Apple can refuse service on parts of the phone affected by it.
'Will this void my warranty?' is one of the most common iPhone questions. The honest answer is that Apple rarely voids a whole warranty — instead, it declines to cover damage caused by certain things.
Things that don't affect your warranty
- Cases, screen protectors and skins.
- Non-Apple chargers and cables, unless they physically damage the phone.
- Installing iOS updates or betas (though beta software isn't supported).
- Battery service or repairs by Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider.
Things that can cost you cover
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Repair by an unauthorised shop | Damage caused by the repair isn't covered; Apple may decline to work on affected parts. |
| Non-genuine screen, battery or camera | Shown as 'Unknown Part' in Settings; related faults won't be covered. |
| Liquid exposure | Treated as accidental damage. |
| Drops and pressure damage | Accidental damage — paid repair without AppleCare+. |
| Altered or removed serial number | The phone isn't eligible for service. |
| Opening the phone yourself | Damage you cause isn't covered. |
What about Self Service Repair?
Apple's Self Service Repair programme supplies genuine parts and tools. Using them doesn't by itself void the warranty, but any damage you cause during the repair isn't covered. Self Service Repair availability varies by country.
Before using an independent repair shop
- Check whether the phone is still under warranty or AppleCare+ — the repair may be free.
- Ask whether the shop uses genuine Apple parts.
- Ask for a written warranty on the repair.
- Check Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History afterwards.
