Update to the latest iOS first — the Face ID restart, 2x photo artifact and touchscreen freeze are software fixes. Persistent display lines, camera-ring marks that won't clean off and US AT&T service loss are hardware issues worth taking to Apple under warranty.
Every new iPhone has a few faulty units. The trick is telling a software bug that an update will fix from a hardware fault that needs a repair.
Software or hardware?
| Problem | Type | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Restart when Face ID fails | Software | Update to iOS 27.0.1 or later |
| Colour artifact in 2x photos | Software | Update to iOS 27.0.1 or later |
| Touchscreen freeze | Software | Update to iOS 27.0.1 or later |
| SOS / no service on AT&T (US Pro Max) | Hardware | Replacement for affected units |
| Earpiece crackle or popping | Unclear | Update, try the workaround, then book diagnostics |
| Pale rings around rear cameras | Cosmetic / hardware | Book an inspection |
| Green or pink line on display | Hardware | Book a repair — don't wait |
Camera-ring discolouration
Some owners of burgundy and black models report pale rings around the rear camera lenses, either from new or appearing over time. Apple hasn't commented publicly. If the mark doesn't come off with a soft, lint-free cloth, photograph it and book an inspection — some owners report being offered a replacement. Don't use bleach or hydrogen peroxide.
The earpiece crackle
This is the least clear issue. iOS 27.0.1 didn't mention it, and some owners heard the same sound on replacement phones, which suggests software. Try a restart and set Mic Mode to Standard during a call. If it persists, book diagnostics so it's on record while you're in warranty.
Returns vs warranty
Apple's returns window is separate from the warranty. If you bought from Apple and you're within the returns period, a return may be quicker than a repair. If you bought from a retailer, its return policy applies.
