iPhone 18 Pro lagging or freezing? 10 things to try

Ten fixes for an iPhone 18 Pro that lags, stutters or freezes: updates, storage, background tasks, the touchscreen freeze bug and resets.

Short answer

Update to iOS 27.0.1 — it fixed a freeze involving Control Center and Notification Center — then work through the list below.

A brand-new A20 Pro iPhone should never feel slow. When it does, the cause is almost always software.

10 things to try

  1. Update to iOS 27.0.1 or later.
  2. Give it 48 hours after setup for background indexing to finish.
  3. Update all apps — older versions may not be optimised for iOS 27.
  4. Restart the phone.
  5. Force-restart: press volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  6. Free up storage — keep at least 10–15% free.
  7. Check Settings › Battery for an app hogging background power.
  8. Remove and re-add widgets that misbehave.
  9. Reset All Settings (Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset) — this keeps your data.
  10. If freezes continue, back up and restore as a new phone, or contact Apple Support.
