iPhone not ringing for incoming calls? 8 settings to check

If calls go straight to voicemail or your iPhone doesn't ring: Focus modes, Silence Unknown Callers, Call Screening, Bluetooth and Ring/Silent settings.

Short answer

The usual culprits are a Focus mode, Silence Unknown Callers, the Action button set to Silent, or a connected Bluetooth device. Check them in that order.

A phone that doesn't ring is almost always a settings problem.

Check these

  1. Ring/Silent: press the Action button or open Control Center to check silent mode.
  2. Focus: swipe down for Control Center and turn off Do Not Disturb or any Focus.
  3. Settings › Apps › Phone › Silence Unknown Callers — turn it off if you expect new numbers (common with delivery drivers).
  4. Call Screening and filtering options in the Phone app settings.
  5. Bluetooth: calls may ring on earbuds or a car you're not using.
  6. Settings › Sounds & Haptics: confirm a ringtone is set and volume is up.
  7. Check you haven't blocked the caller (Phone › Blocked Contacts).
  8. Call forwarding: dial your operator's code or check with e&, du or virgin mobile.
