iPhone 18 Pro's smaller Dynamic Island: how Face ID moved and what you gain

Why the iPhone 18 Pro Dynamic Island is smaller, how part of Face ID moved under the display, three Live Activities at once, and reported visible pixels.

Short answer

Apple moved Face ID's infrared camera beneath the display, so the Dynamic Island shrinks. It can now show three Live Activities at once. A few owners notice the pixels over the hidden sensor in certain light.

The Dynamic Island is the only visible design change on the front of the iPhone 18 Pro, and it's a small one.

What changed

  • Part of the TrueDepth system — the infrared camera — now sits under the display.
  • The Dynamic Island cut-out is smaller, leaving more usable screen.
  • It can show three Live Activities at once, up from two.

Three Live Activities in practice

A food delivery, a ride and a timer can now all be visible together. Live Activities from apps such as Talabat, Careem and Noon depend on each app's support.

Visible pixels

Some owners say the display area above the hidden sensor is visible against white backgrounds. It's normal for under-display technology and doesn't affect Face ID.

Face ID and screen protectors

Use protectors designed for iPhone 18 Pro. A protector that covers the sensor area with the wrong material can affect Face ID reliability.
