iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: what actually changed?

iPhone 18 Pro vs 17 Pro compared: camera, battery, performance, display, charging, AI and design — and whether you'll notice the difference.

Short answer

The camera is the only change most people will notice. Battery, performance, display and AI improvements are real but modest.

iPhone 17 Pro was a big redesign. iPhone 18 Pro refines it. Here's every area compared, with an honest verdict on whether you'd notice each change.

Camera — noticeable

iPhone 18 Pro's main camera adds a variable aperture (f/1.48 to f/4.0), while iPhone 17 Pro has a fixed aperture. That means more natural blur in close-ups and the option of deeper focus for groups and landscapes. Manual shutter, white balance and a histogram arrive in the Camera app, and Cinematic mode goes from 4K30 to 4K60.

If you mostly take photos in auto mode, you'll see the biggest difference in portraits of people and food at close range.

Battery — a little noticeable

Apple rates the 18 Pro at up to 36 hours of video playback and says the Pro Max has its largest battery-life jump ever. The A20 Pro's efficiency and the C2 modem both help. Expect a little more headroom at the end of the day, not a different charging routine.

Performance — rarely noticeable

The A20 Pro is up to 20% faster in CPU and up to 40% faster in GPU than the A19 Pro. You'll feel it in demanding games and video exports. In WhatsApp, Instagram and Safari, both phones are instant.

Display — slightly noticeable

The same sizes and display technology, but a smaller Dynamic Island that now shows three Live Activities instead of two.

Charging — modest

Reviewers report faster charging on iPhone 18 Pro, but iPhone 17 Pro was already quick, reaching about 50% in around 20 minutes with a suitable high-wattage adapter. Check Apple's tech specs for the exact figures for your model.

AI features — mostly the same

Both phones support Apple Intelligence and the iOS 27 Siri AI beta. The A20 Pro's faster Neural Engine helps on-device AI tasks run quicker, but there's no major AI feature exclusive to iPhone 18 Pro at launch.

Design — familiar

The overall design carries over from iPhone 17 Pro. The new colours — black, silver, glacier and burgundy — are the easiest way to tell them apart.

Price

iPhone 18 Pro starts $100 higher than iPhone 17 Pro did in the US. Now that iPhone 18 Pro is out, iPhone 17 Pro is increasingly available from retailers and as certified used stock at lower prices.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 18 Pro camera better than the iPhone 17 Pro?

Yes, mainly because of the variable-aperture main camera and new manual controls. The difference is clearest in close-up portraits and creative shots.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro battery noticeably better than iPhone 17 Pro?

It's better on paper and you may notice a little extra headroom at night, but it's not a dramatic change for most users.

Can you feel the performance difference?

Only in demanding games, long 4K video recording and video exports.
