A20 Pro and the new vapor chamber: how fast is iPhone 18 Pro really?

iPhone 18 Pro's A20 Pro chip explained: 2nm, up to 20% faster CPU and 40% faster GPU, a 3x larger vapor chamber, and what it means for games and AI.

Short answer

The A20 Pro is Apple's first 2nm iPhone chip. Apple quotes up to 20% faster CPU and 40% faster GPU than A19 Pro; independent benchmarks reportedly show around 24–26% gains. A vapor chamber with three times the surface area helps sustain that performance.

Raw speed matters less than it used to. What's changed is how long the phone can stay fast.

The chip

  • 6-core CPU: two performance and four efficiency cores.
  • 7-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each core and hardware ray tracing.
  • A faster Neural Engine for on-device Apple Intelligence.
  • Up to 50% more memory bandwidth.

The vapor chamber

Apple says the new vapor chamber has three times the surface area and delivers up to 40% better sustained performance. In practice that means fewer slow-downs in long gaming sessions, 4K video recording and navigation in warm weather.

Who notices the difference

  • Mobile gamers playing console-class titles.
  • Creators recording ProRes RAW or long 4K clips.
  • Heavy users of on-device AI features.
  • Most other people won't notice day to day — iPhone 17 Pro is already fast.
